Concept
The brief was to make an installation for the feature wall of a new restaurant opening in Shortmarket Street; The Shortmarket Club.
The restaurant is divided into two spaces; bar/kitchen and dining area. The dining area is accessed by walking though late 19th century steel framed stained glass doors, opening into the dinning room facing onto the feature wall; the end gable of the building.
The restaurant's look is up market, late 19th century Gentleman's club with clean industrial edges.
The idea popped; to fill the entire wall with entomology boxes, boxes of butterfly collections; entomology a neat embodiment of colonialism and the Gentleman's club.
The technique is to make butterflies out of paper. The paper[s] have relevance and meaning for the people who own, work and have had significant dealings with the restaurant. The paper comprises of personal photographs, building plans, menu plans, stock lists etc. The installation provides an accessible and engaging artwork for patrons, whilst having personal and intimate significance for those personally involved.
