Concept

The brief was to make an installation for the feature wall of a new restaurant opening in Shortmarket Street; The Shortmarket Club. The restaurant is divided into two spaces; bar/kitchen and dining area. The dining area is accessed by walking though late 19th century steel framed stained glass doors, opening into the dinning room facing onto the feature wall; the end gable of the building. The restaurant's look is up market, late 19th century Gentleman's club with clean industrial edges. The idea popped; to fill the entire wall with entomology boxes, boxes of butterfly collections; entomology a neat embodiment of colonialism and the Gentleman's club. The technique is to make butterflies out of paper. The paper[s] have relevance and meaning for the people who own, work and have had significant dealings with the restaurant.
